Hurricanes Weekend Roundup – December 2/3 Edition

By Reegan MacAulay

The Holland Hurricanes experienced an up-and-down weekend, including intense ACAA volleyball action at home and a doubleheader sweep on the road in ACHA women’s hockey. Here’s a full breakdown of all your recent 'Canes action.

Women's Volleyball

The women’s volleyball Hurricanes fell short of a late comeback effort this past Saturday against the now 6-2 Mount Allison Mounties at the McMillan Centre in Charlottetown.

Both teams fired points back and forth early, but the Mounties found momentum and were up 22-14 towards the end of the first set. A 'Canes timeout helped close the gap, but the Mounties would also call one and rebound for a 25-19 set win.

The second set was similar as the Mounties turned hot once again minutes in and were leading 16-9 prior to a 'Canes timeout. Nothing would change and the Mounties dominated the rest of the set en route to a 25-11 win.

The 'Canes surprised everyone in the third set with an early 8-3 lead, but the Mounties didn’t give up and tied the score 13-13. Holland rebounded with a 17-15 lead, forcing a Mounties timeout, which didn’t work. Holland dominated the rest of the set, winning 25-21.

The pressure was on for the fourth set and the 'Canes knew it as they took an early 4-1 lead, which was quickly taken away with a 5-5 tie. More back and forth action ensued with the 'Canes eventually leading 12-11, then a 16-15 Mounties lead, and a 22-15 Mounties lead. The 'Canes called one more timeout, but it wouldn’t be enough as Mount Allison held on 25-19, winning the game 3-1.

Morgan White led the 'Canes with eight kills, while Kyra Benson added eight digs.

The 'Canes are now 5-4 and currently sit tied for fourth in the conference with the 5-3 St. Thomas University (STU) Tommies.

Both teams fired points back and forth early, but in no time, the 'Canes were up 20-10. The Chargers called a timeout, but the 'Canes remained hot and won the first set 25-12.

The second set saw a major rally from the Chargers as they went up 7-2. The 'Canes subbed on Johnny Hyndman to turn things around and he helped Holland tie the game at nine with back-to-back blocks. The 'Canes eventually went up 18-12 and hung on to win the second set 25-12.

The third set was yet another back-and-forth battle. Multiple service errors led to the 'Canes subbing on Shannon Howell, who helped the 'Canes get to a 15-12 lead, forcing a Chargers timeout. Holland never looked back the rest of the way, and despite another Chargers timeout, the rest of the set was all Holland, as they hung on 25-16 and won the game.
